Information Processing in the Beyond CMOS Era

The "transistor," a fundamental building block for almost all modern electronics, is rapidly approaching its fundamental limits for geometrical scaling. New approaches and perhaps a fundamental re-think of logic circuits are necessary to continue innovation in this extremely important field that has enabled economic prosperity—flourishing research in the physical sciences and connecting the world through the internet. This seminar brings together leading intellectuals from university and industry in the fields spanning physics, materials sciences, and electrical engineering to discuss critically prospects and approaches for alternate computing variables that may utilize fundamentally new physics or phenomena. Anticipated outcomes could include identifying new cross-disciplinary research fields that could be pursued through external funding and writing a critical review paper assessing the state of the art in disruptive approaches for computation.
