Paperwork: Agencies and Subjectivities

This workshop focused on modern metaphors of “paper.” Ben Kafka (Princeton Institute for Advanced Study) discussed the rise of paperwork with state bureaucracies in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, while Lisa Gitelman (NYU Media Studies) spoke about paperwork during and after the French Revolution and in today’s bureaucracies, as “paperwork” takes the form of PDFs and other electronic genres.
