Sensory Overload

May 2011

The study of the senses has recently (re-)captured the imagination of the wider humanities. As neuroscience seems to make great strides, and as various humanistic disciplines shift to new epistemological, aesthetic, and ontological questions, the senses emerge as a renewed source of insight. This seminar will bring together a group of scholars, scientists, and practitioners (i.e., artists, broadly conceived) on the senses to understand the multiple dimensions—practical, theoretical, artistic, scientific, historical, and cultural—in which the senses operate and help us make sense of the world. By focusing on what takes place at the extremes of sensory perception, and in keeping with our title “sensory overload,” we will particularly explore the transitions and liminal experiences of perception, with the intent to clarify and understand better the nature of perceptual knowledge.
