Drawing on the most recent research on the social history of WWII in France, as well as on the sociological literature dealing with resistance, I will prepare a book revisiting Jewish Résistance in France through an integrated approach. I will combine the aspects that have been addressed by historians who analyze French resistance to the Occupation with the concerns of those who focus on the Jews’ responses to the anti-Semitic policy. This approach considers Jewish resistance in France as a chapter in the history of French Jewry, while shedding new light on the French Résistance as a whole.
For this project, I am looking for a research partner to assist me with general organization of the material. He or she would help me with bibliographical preparation of the book through targeted literature searches at the Harvard libraries and synthesize some of the material.
Basic research skills in history and/or sociology as well as very good knowledge of French are essential. Familiarity with French and/or Jewish history would be appreciated.
The student participating in this project would learn a lot about French history during World War II, French Jewry, and different approaches to the phenomenon of resistance.
