I need assistance with managing video and audio recordings from my fieldwork in Mali. My research partner will assist in developing the materials into an ebook or a set of web presentations that explain and tell the story of the balafon music of Neba Solo, the most renowned musician from the Kenedougou region of Southern Mali. (A short example of Neba Solo's group can be seen at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9nr-at4dc0k.)
I am seeking a research partner with experience in FinalCut Pro/Logic, or other video/audio editing software, and/or experience with other software platforms for use in presenting media on the Internet or in ebooks. The student will have access to a wide range of materials recorded between 2002 and 2010 in Mali, and in the process have an opportunity to learn about Malian music, the place of the pentatonic bala within its musical culture, and the social and political commentary embedded in popular song. I will benefit from the student's expertise in media technology and understanding of the possibilities of the Internet, which will enable me to create a more compelling format for my book.
