The Influence of Influence
The Influence of Influence presents two facets of Romuald Karmakar's cinematographic work: a double feature of documentaries from the beginning of his career, Sam Shaw on John Cassavetes (1990) and Hellman Rider (1988), and a variety of clips filmed during his time at the Radcliffe Institute at Harvard University (2012–2013). The early documentaries explore the nature of artistic inspiration through conversations with influential figures of American film and Hollywood, the photographer and producer Sam Shaw and the director Monte Hellman. Alongside these documentaries a new clip will be presented on each day of the exhibit as part of a running 19 Clips for 19 Days series. Together, Karmakar's early works and recent takes examine the continuing "influence of influence" and the people and places from which these inspirations are drawn.
The exhibit is in the first-floor gallery of Byerly Hall, at 8 Garden Street, Radcliffe Yard, Cambridge, MA 02138.
The exhibit will open with a reception at 5:30 p.m. on February 4, following a fellow’s presentation by Romuald Karmakar at 4 p.m. in the Sheerr Room, Fay House, in Radcliffe Yard.
From February 5 to February 28, the exhibit will be open Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
