Betty Shamieh is a playwright, actress, and the author of Roar, which premiered off-Broadway and was selected as a New York Times Critics Pick for four consecutive weeks.

During her fellowship, she will be writing a new play that explores the experiences and challenges facing the Arab American community.

Shamieh is a graduate of Harvard University and the Yale School of Drama. Her plays have been produced at the New Group, Magic Theatre, and Theater for the New City. She has been awarded a National Endowment for the Arts grant, a Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Study and Conference Center residency, a New Dramatists Van Lier Fellowship, a commission from Trinity Repertory, and a New York Foundation for the Arts award.
