This information is accurate as of the fellowship year indicated for each fellow.

Paul G. Falkowski is a Board of Governors Professor of Geological Sciences in the Institute of Marine and Coastal Sciences and the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Rutgers University. His scientific interests include biogeochemical cycles, biophysics, the evolution of Earth systems, paleoecology, photosynthesis, and symbiosis. His current research efforts are directed toward understanding the coevolution of biological and physical systems.

During his Institute fellowship, Falkowski will be working on a book with the provisional title “From Star Dust to Life.” The idea stems from a notional understanding of “Earth systems” as the integration of geological and biological processes leading to emergent properties and behaviors of this planet. Inevitably, however, these notional concepts are filtered through the lenses of disciplines. Having taught History of Earth Systems for nine years, Falkowski would like to step back and discuss the fundamental concepts in a series of linked essays for a general audience.

Falkowski is the director of the Rutgers Energy Institute. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1992, an A.G. Huntsman Award for Excellence in Marine Science in 1998, the G. Evelyn Hutchinson Award in 2000, the Vladimir Ivanovich Vernadsky Medal from the European Geosciences Union in 2005, the ECI Prize from the International Ecology Institute in 2010, and the Médaille Commémorative Albert Ier from the Institut Oceanographique in 2011. He was elected a fellow of the American Geophysical Union in 2001, to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2002, and to the National Academy of Sciences in 2007.
