Led by Lucy Caplan ’12, this workshop will feature a performance by the bass-baritone Davóne Tines ’09 and the pianist Matthew Aucoin ’12 of excerpts from Tom-Tom (1932), an opera by the author, musicologist, and composer Shirley Graham Du Bois.

Participants will also have the opportunity to view selected items from the Graham Du Bois Papers, held at the Schlesinger Library.

A post-performance discussion, moderated by Chad L. Williams, the 2017–2018 Evelyn Green Davis Fellow, will delve into Tom-Tom’s complex representations of race, gender, and history, as well as the challenges and possibilities that arise in performing this musical work today.

This event is part of the American Modern Opera Company’s teaching and performance residency at Harvard University.
