The poet and Radcliffe Institute visiting scholar Solmaz Sharif will read selected poems and participate in a discussion with Evie Shockley RI ’19.

An award-winning poet, Solmaz Sharif was born in Istanbul to Iranian parents. Her first collection, Look: Poems (Graywolf Press, 2016), was a finalist for the National Book Award and the PEN Open Book Award and was the winner of the 2017 American Book Award for poetry.

Her work has been recognized with a “Discovery”/Boston Review Poetry Prize, a Rona Jaffe Foundation Writers’ Award, and a National Endowment for the Arts Literature Fellowship. She has also received a 2016 Lannan Literary Fellowship, the 2017 Theodore H. Holmes ’51 and Bernice Holmes National Poetry Prize from the Lewis Center for the Arts at Princeton University, and the 2017 PEN Center USA Literary Award for Poetry. Her work has appeared in the Boston Review, Granta, Gulf Coast, jubilat, the Kenyon Review, the New Republic, Poetry, Witness, and other publications.

Solmaz Sharif is a former Wallace Stegner Fellow and a former managing director of the Asian American Writers’ Workshop. She is currently a lecturer at Stanford University. Sharif holds degrees from the University of California, Berkeley, where she studied and taught with June Jordan’s Poetry for the People, and New York University.

Evie Shockley is a 2018–2019 Radcliffe Institute fellow and a professor of English at Rutgers University–New Brunswick.

This event is part of the Roosevelt Poetry Readings at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. The Roosevelt Poetry Readings are made possible by a donation to help bring poets of recognized stature to the Institute.

This event is also part of Worldwide Week at Harvard 2018, which showcases the remarkable breadth of Harvard’s global engagement.
