Urban Space and Democratic Citizenship

September 2017

The purpose of this seminar is to promote cross-disciplinary research addressing how urban space affects democratic citizenship: the ability of citizens to engage in public life as equals. We will ask how the built environment—the places humans construct for residing, recreation, and commerce—affect the incorporation of diverse populations into the polity through participation and empowerment in community life. This seminar will also ask what public policies contribute to a built environment that encourages broad democratic citizenship.
