The Evolution of Music Cognition

Evolutionary Biology/Psychology

Reviewing and synthesizing the research literature on evolutionary theories of human musical behavior.

Finding relevant articles and books, reading the relevant passages, working with me to create a timeline and taxonomy of different theories of the evolution of human musical behavior, from Darwin onward.

Skills needed: proactive, organized, good at taking notes from research articles or books and synthesizing information into clear, concise documents. A background in evolutionary biology and an interest in music cognition would be ideal for this project.

Having a research partner will allow me to find, examine, and synthesize a broader range of research literature on this topic than I could on my own. If the collaboration goes well, we will aim to publish a comprehensive review article on evolutionary theories of human musical behavior, on which the student would be a co-author.
