This project is a novel in progress. Hippocrates is set in Sri Lanka and New York. The story begins in the 1970s and ends in 2009, and includes material connected to militancy, mass casualties, political theatre, activism, feminism, medicine, and international/humanitarian law. (Excerpts have been published in Granta and Ploughshares; reading them may be helpful to prospective applicants.)

I will ask the research partner to help me find answers to specific historical questions, to set up and transcribe interviews, and to locate (and possibly read and annotate) some resources.

Hippocrates may be of particular interest to students studying South Asia, government, women’s studies, international relations, and history of science. The research partner would have an opportunity to see a long fiction project in development and to observe research and writing strategies. He or she would also be welcome to suggest other modes of participation—for example, designing a book website. Small projects associated with this book could add to a publishing or design or media portfolio (depending on student interests).
