Permanence and Impermanence

Painting/Conservation/Art History

The idea for this project is to study materials used in oil painting. The student will help with physical experiments in the studio, as well as research using resources at the Harvard Art Museum and the Harvard Mineralogical and Geological Museum.

A student would be able to assist me with research and experimentation, but also with conceptualization of broader issues about materials used in painting. We would think together about their cultural significance and their inherent properties, and how both change over time.

This project would give a student a chance to learn more about the materiality and methods of painting. In particular, we would research both contemporary and art historical issues of permanence and impermanence.
