Cambridge, Mass. — The Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University has announced that one of the world’s experts on choice, Sheena Iyengar, author of The Art of Choosing (Twelve, 2010), will give the first lecture in the 2010–2011 Dean’s Lecture Series. Iyengar, the inaugural S. T. Lee Professor of Business in the Management Division at Columbia Business School, will speak about her book in a lecture titled “The Art of Choosing.” She will explore issues such as the complex relationship between choice and freedom, how too much choice can overwhelm us and how our choices — both mundane and momentous — are shaped by many different forces. Her work is regularly cited in the popular press, including the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Fortune and Time magazines, the BBC, and National Public Radio, as well as in best-selling books such as Blink (Little, Brown and Company, 2005) by Malcolm Gladwell. The lecture is on October 21, 2010, at 4 p.m. in the Radcliffe Gymnasium at 10 Garden Street, Cambridge, Massachusetts. The event is free and open to the public.
The Radcliffe Institute’s annual Dean’s Lecture Series — sponsored by the Institute’s Academic Engagement Programs (AEP) — brings luminaries in the arts, academic disciplines and professions to Harvard University for public talks. Following Iyengar’s October 21 lecture will be the “Why Books” conference on October 28–29, 2010. This conference will bring together speakers from a variety of disciplines — from literature and history to sociology and computer science — to probe the form and function of the book in a rapidly changing media ecology.
Future lecturers in the Dean’s Lecture Series include C. David Allis from the Rockefeller University on February 22, 2011, and Dame Gillian Beer from the University of Cambridge (UK) on March 24, 2011.
