Anthony Abraham Jack is a junior fellow at the Harvard Society of Fellows and an assistant professor of education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He holds the Shutzer Assistant Professorship at Harvard Radcliffe Institute. Jack’s first book, The Privileged Poor: How Elite Colleges Are Failing Disadvantaged Students (Harvard University Press, 2019), was awarded a 2020 Mirra Komarovsky Book Award, a 2019 CEP Mildred García Award for Exemplary Scholarship, and the 2018 Thomas J. Wilson Memorial Prize.

During his fellowship, Jack is working on a project titled “And Then Covid Came.”

Jack received his BA cum laude in women’s and gender studies and religion from Amherst College and an AM and PhD in sociology from Harvard University. His scholarship appears in the Common Reader, Du Bois Review, Sociological Forum, and Sociology of Education and has earned awards from the American Educational Studies Association, American Sociological Association, Association for the Study of Higher Education, Eastern Sociological Society, and Society for the Study of Social Problems. Jack has received fellowships from the Ford Foundation and the National Science Foundation and was an NAEd/Spencer Dissertation Fellow. The National Center for Institutional Diversity named him to its Diversity Scholars Network and the National Head Start Association named him a 2020 BOLD Alumni Leader. A number of popular media outlets have featured his research, writings, and experiences as a first-generation college student, including in the American Conservative, the Atlantic, the Nation, the New York Times, the New Yorker, NPR, Vox, and the Washington Post.
