Hope Harvey

Hope Harvey is a PhD candidate in sociology and social policy at Harvard University. Her research addresses questions related to poverty, the family, housing and neighborhoods, and access to social programs. 

Harvey’s dissertation focuses on families with children who live in doubled-up, or shared, households—a household form experienced by approximately half of American children. This project combines longitudinal, in-depth interview data with nationally representative survey data to examine the causes and consequences for children and families of different types of doubled-up households.

Harvey received her BA with a major in sociology and anthropology from Carleton College, an MPA from the Robert M. La Follette School of Public Affairs at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and an MA in sociology from Harvard University. She has also worked as a case manager for people experiencing homelessness. Her research has been supported by Harvard’s Center for American Political Studies, its Institute for Quantitative Social Science, and its Joint Center for Housing Studies; the MacArthur Foundation; the Multidisciplinary Program in Inequality and Social Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School; and the Penn Social Science and Policy Forum.
