Jane P. Chang is a professor and the William F. Seyer Chair in Materials Electrochemistry in the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department at UCLA. Her research focuses on the synthesis and chemical processing of novel and multifunctional materials, atomistic understanding of solid state interfaces, and their applications in microelectronics, optoelectronics, microsensors, and energy storage devices.

As a Radcliffe fellow, Chang plans to address the research opportunity at the interdisciplinary intersection of microelectronics materials processing and physical chemistry, leveraging the studies and understanding of surface reaction controlled chemical selectivity in atomic layer etching to de-poison the catalysts, thereby realizing sustainability in chemical processing. Beyond sustainability, a potential broader impact of this work is to address the lesser-known yet serious fact that many catalysts are sourced from conflict-mined minerals, leveraging the rich literature and ongoing effort related to this topic at Harvard Kennedy School’s Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government and Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs.

Chang obtained her PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1998 and was a postdoctoral fellow at Bell Labs Innovations and Lucent Technologies until 1999. She has been at UCLA since 1999. She received a National Science Foundation CAREER award in 2000, an Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Program award in 2003, the AVS Peter Mark Memorial Award in 2005, and the AVS Plasma Science & Technology Division Plasma Prize in 2018. Chang has also received a number of teaching awards and is a fellow of AVS and AIChE.
