This information is accurate as of the fellowship year indicated for each fellow.

Karin B. Michels is the chair of the Department of Epidemiology at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, in Los Angeles. She is an epigenetic epidemiologist and explores how perinatal events shape our chronic disease risk. The dynamic epigenetic code instruments our genes and affects our disease risk.

During her time at Radcliffe, Michels is examining whether and how epigenetic marks may be transgenerationally heritable. In collaboration with other scientists from the Harvard campus, she aims to explore mechanisms that establish a memory across generations.

Michels received a doctorate in epidemiology from Harvard University and a doctorate in biostatistics from the University of Cambridge. She has received numerous research grants from the American Cancer Society, the Department of Defense, the National Institutes of Health, and other granting organizations. In 2013, she published the first textbook on epigenetic epidemiology.
