Philip Thai is a historian of Modern China and East Asia with research and teaching interests that include legal history, economic history, and diplomatic history. His fellowship project presents a transnational history of the Greater China economy—Communist China, Nationalist Taiwan, British Hong Kong, and Portuguese Macao—from 1945 to 1991, revealing a history overlooked by research on high diplomacy and examining the creative ways actors negotiated a tangled web of domestic strictures and international embargoes.
