Newton Trees and Algebraic Curves

Pierrette Cassou-Noguès is interested in the interplay between number theory and geometry. In particular, she studies the influence of singularities on important objects in number theory, such as zeta functions.

Her aim at Radcliffe is to write part of a book that takes an elementary and concrete approach to algebraic curves. This approach combines old and new methods by using combinatoric tools such as Newton polygons and trees.

Cassou-Noguès received her PhD from Université Bordeaux I, where she has been a professor since 1980. She was invited to the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, in 1980. In 1985, she was chosen to be a Benjamin Pierce lecturer at Harvard University. She was also nominated to be a visitor to the Institut de Hautes Études Scientifiques in Bures-sur-Yvette, France, in 1983 and again in 1987. In 2000, she received a sabbatical grant from the Spanish Ministry of Education and Culture to spend six months at the Universidad Complutense Madrid.
