Sawako Kaijima

Sawako Kaijima is a Shutzer Assistant Professor at the Radcliffe Institute and an assistant professor of architecture at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. Her work investigates the integration of architectural, structural, and environmental knowledge to create unique, efficient, and previously unattainable designs. In pursuing this objective, she develops computational design methods and artifacts employing computer simulation and various digital fabrication technologies. She has led multiple interdisciplinary research projects in collaboration with various fields as varied as structural engineering, aeronautics, material science, and art.

During the year at Radcliffe, Kaijima is working on two projects: one looking at traditional crafts in light of digital technologies in collaboration with craft artists, and the other a volumetric data representation project in collaboration with neuropsychiatrists. Both projects utilize technology as a vehicle for knowledge integration that could influence contemporary design thinking and its materialization.

Prior to joining Harvard, Kaijima held an appointment at the Singapore University of Technology and Design. She received a master of architecture degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her work has been widely published and exhibited, and it has won multiple design awards, including an A&D Trophy Award, an INSIDE Award, and a Singapore Design Award.
