Susanne Kühn

Inspired by the Romantic tradition, landscape artist Susanne Kühn focuses her paintings and drawings on a spiritual journey through life and on places of refuge and meditation. The artist, who was born and educated in Germany, juxtaposes elements and themes from traditional European landscape painting with a variety of painterly languages ranging from Renaissance perspectives to Japanese woodcuts to modern abstraction.

Kühn’s Radcliffe project will consist of a series of landscape paintings that transcend time and geography. These paintings will evolve around the theoretical origin of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century landscape and garden architecture in Europe.

After earning her MFA from the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig, Kühn moved to New York to study at the School of Visual Arts and Hunter College. She has had exhibitions at New York’s Bill Maynes Gallery, Bucknell University Art Gallery, Weatherspoon Museum in Greensboro, North Carolina, and the German Consulate House, and has a permanent installation at Central Station Leipzig. Her work has been reviewed in the New York Times, Artforum, and Artnet.
