Jean Valentine '56, BI '68 is an American poet whose work has won numerous awards, including the Yale Series of Younger Poets prize for her first book, published in 1965. Valentine taught poetry at the 92nd Street Y in New York City and several colleges, among them Sarah Lawrence College, Hunter College, City University of New York, Yale University, Swarthmore College, Barnard College, and Columbia University. Her work is known for its spiritual and dream-like quality and—in the words of another Radcliffe College graduate and poet, Adrienne Rich—“is poetry of the highest order, because it lets us into spaces and meanings we couldn't approach in any other way."
