The exhibition runs Tuesday, October 10, 2006, through Friday, March 30, 2007.
Celebrating the life and work of Sally Fox (1929–2006), this exhibition showcases pictures from her extraordinary collection of images of women. The "New Woman" of the 1890s and early twentieth century is well represented in the Fox collection, where she is both idealized and satirized in images ranging from small cutouts to large posters. These images feature women venturing beyond domestic boundaries; using their bodies in new ways; enjoying higher education, professional life, sports, and travel; and remaking femininity.
An independent picture researcher, Sally Fox amassed an extensive collection of images of women. She published portions of her collection as The Medieval Woman: An Illuminated Book of Days (1985), The Victorian Woman: A Book of Days (1987), and The Sporting Woman: A Book of Days (1989). The library held a reception in her honor in October.
