Open Access for Scholarly Books: A Sustainable Funding Model for the 21st Century

January 2012

The Open Access for Scholarly Books workshop included a small group of senior university press directors, librarians, and administrators. Dr. Frances Pinter, the founding publisher of Bloomsbury Academic in London, presented her proposal for sustainable open-access publishing through a library consortium purchasing model, and there were discussions of other possible models. The purpose of the workshop was not to arrive at firm conclusions or an action plan but rather to engage in open debate in a closed setting (i.e. no public or press) in order to explore the practical possibilities for monograph publishing in a digital environment.
