Postindustrial Ecology: New Values in Recovering Marine Ecosystems

A presentation from 2022–2023 Radcliffe fellow Joe Roman
Roman is a conservation biologist and researcher. During his fellowship, he will examine how recent studies of animal ecology have changed our views of the role of marine vertebrates in ocean ecosystems through the lens of “postindustrial ecology”—a term he has coined for the transition from extractive industries to cultural and supporting services, such as ecotourism and recreational fishing—and write a historical analysis of this shift for a journal article and a related book on the role of animals in biogeochemical cycles and building ecosystems.
