Amsale (Amy) Alemu is a PhD candidate in the Department of African and African American Studies at Harvard University. Her work engages Black transnationalism, Ethiopian political thought, and digital and multimedia scholarship.

At Radcliffe, Alemu is completing her dissertation, which explores Ethiopian student political organizing in the United States. Her work is attentive to Ethiopian involvement with US Black freedom movements during the decades leading to the 1974 Ethiopian Revolution, animating the processes that construct Blackness within Black transnational narratives.

Alemu’s work is funded by the Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad and Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships. She has helped teach courses in African American studies and African languages and culture and has been awarded for distinction in teaching. She co-convened a yearlong workshop for implementing projects in multimedia history as a design fellow at the History Design Studio. Alemu earned an AM in history from Harvard University and an honors AB in history and economics from Harvard College, where she received the Thomas T. Hoopes Prize for outstanding scholarly research.
