This information is accurate as of the fellowship year indicated for each fellow.

David Hemenway is a professor of health policy at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and director of the Harvard Injury Control Research Center and Harvard Youth Violence Prevention Center. He teaches classes on injury and on economics and has written widely in the fields of economics and public health.

While at Radcliffe, Hemenway is continuing his work to find common ground between gunners and such groups as governors, faith leaders, and advocates to effectively address firearm injuries. He is also beginning his work on a book that summarizes what is currently known about firearms and public health and the programs and policies that seem to work to reduce gun violence.

Hemenway earned an AB and PhD in economics from Harvard University. He has written five books and is the author of more than 240 journal articles on injury prevention, including articles on firearms, violence, suicide, child abuse, motor vehicle crashes, fires, falls, and fractures. His work has been supported by the Open Society Foundations, the Pew Charitable Trust, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Hemenway has been recognized for his excellence in teaching many times, winning 10 teaching awards, University-wide recognition as an outstanding teacher, and an inaugural HCSA Community Engagement Award from the student association. In 2012, he was recognized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as one of the 20 “most influential injury and violence professionals over the past 20 years.”
