This information is accurate as of the fellowship year indicated for each fellow.

Fernanda Aoki Navarro is a composer of acoustic and electroacoustic music who develops intermedia works, performance art, and installations. She is interested in sound, the idiosyncratic relationship between the corporeality of the performers and the physicality of their instruments, the exploration between music and language, and the transformational power that experimental music can exert on issues related to feminism and social otherness.

At the Radcliffe Institute, Aoki Navarro is composing the multimedia work Surveilled / Surveyed, an interdisciplinary project that combines music, anatomy, recent technologies on surveillance and tracking activities, dynamic projection mapping, and performance.

Aoki Navarro studied composition at Universidade de São Paulo and completed her master’s and PhD at the University of California, Santa Cruz and San Diego, respectively. Her music has been performed internationally by such ensembles as Fonema Consort, Gnarwhallaby, the International Contemporary Ensemble, the New York Philharmonic, Talea Ensemble, and Yarn/Wire, among others. She’s also engaged with promoting experimental music, working as a producer and curator of such concerts and music festivals as Festival Internacional de Música Experimental and Springfest. Aoki Navarro doesn’t like to be reduced to her gender, doesn’t know how to samba, procrastinates to write program notes, doesn’t know how to react to compliments or critiques, goes to the cinema every week, and drinks coffee every day.
