Peter Gray

As a writer and thinker, Peter Gray sees himself as an equal cross of Oscar Wilde, Henry David Thoreau, and the entire cast of The Muppets. Inspired by barbaric yawps, clowning, and Surrealist set design, he crafts stories of unapologetic playfulness that invigorate and disrupt the status quo with perspicacious gusto. His work is an empowered reclaiming of ritual, queerness, hope, and epic.

Combining the technological and unabashedly queer, The (Occasionally) Fabulous Codes of Alan Turing & Chris Hughes unites gay icons Turing (father of the computer) and Hughes (Facebook cofounder) to devise a dynamic guide to cracking the codes of technology, gay society, and the contemporary world. Gray is crafting a thoughtful, interdisciplinary “theatrical guidebook” that examines technology both as a tool for connection and as a barrier to (particularly queer) intimacy. This project is a vital, uniquely open meditation on what it means to be a thinking, feeling, functioning human in today’s world and whether there’s any hope in finding the human heart amid the Twitterverse.

Raised in Birmingham, Alabama, Gray holds a BA in theatre studies from Yale University. His work has been internationally recognized by institutions such as Akademie Schloss Solitude, D’Arts et de rêves, Lambda Literary, Sewanee Writers’ Conference, and Yaddo. As a 2019 MacDowell Fellow, Gray began a series of modern day closet dramas designed to be read aloud at home. He received a 2023 Elizabeth George Foundation Grant to support the writing of his first novel.
