During his time at Radcliffe, Shen is exploring the intersection between quantum materials and quantum devices for new ways to develop quantum sensing and quantum information-processing methods.

With more than 450 publications and an h-index over 100, Shen is among the most-cited physicists of his generation. He has been recognized by the Ernest Orlando Lawrence Award from the US Department of Energy, the Oliver E. Buckley Condensed Matter Physics Prize from the American Physical Society, the Kamerlingh Onnes Prize from the International Conference on the Materials and Mechanisms of Superconductivity, and the Einstein Professorship from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Shen is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences and a foreign member of Chinese Academy of Sciences. He was the chief scientist of SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory (2008–2011), the first director of the Stanford Institute for Materials and Energy Sciences (2006–2011), and the director of Geballe Laboratory for Advanced Materials (2004–2007). He serves on the faculty advisory board of the Stanford Knight-Hennessy Scholars program and the scientific advisory board of the Max Planck Institute for the Structure and Dynamics of Matter.
