Join us for our continuing series of Virtual Radcliffe Book Talks exploring recent publications whose subjects or authors have a connection with Harvard Radcliffe Institute.

The 2023 summer series continues with V.V. Ganeshananthan RI ’15, author of Brotherless Night (Random House, 2023). Ganeshananthan is a McKnight Presidential Fellow and associate professor of English at the University of Minnesota, where she teaches in the MFA program in creative writing. Brotherless Night, a New York Times Editors' Choice selection, follows a young Tamil woman in Jaffna as she navigates the beginning of the Sri Lankan civil war in the 1980s. While she pursues her ambition to be a doctor, she faces upheavals and atrocities, familial and societal obligations, and the moral complexities of violence and those responsible for it. Ganeshananthan’s previous novel, Love Marriage (Random House, 2008), was named one of the best books of the year by the Washington Post.

Ganeshananthan’s reading will be followed by a discussion with Elizabeth McCracken RI ’09, James A. Michener Chair in Creative Writing, Department of English, University of Texas at Austin, and author, most recently, of The Hero of This Book: A Novel (Ecco, 2022).

The event will also include an audience Q and A.

Harvard Radcliffe Institute gratefully acknowledges the Steiner Dean's Leadership Fund for Academic Ventures, which is supporting this event.
