Susanne Freidberg

An assistant professor of geography at Dartmouth College, Susanne Freidberg studies the political economy and culture of the international trade in food. Freidberg will spend the 2000–2001 fellowship year writing a book on fieldwork conducted in Burkina Faso, Zambia, France, and England. Her research examines how, in an era of frequent “food scares,” changing cultural constructs of food quality and risk are transforming fresh food commodity chains between Africa and Europe.
As a W.E.B. DuBois Institute Fellow at Harvard University from 1997 to 1998, Freidberg served as the assistant editor of Microsoft’s Encarta Africana. Her recent publications appeared the Annals of the Association of American Geographers; Gender, Place and Culture; and the Journal of Modern African Studies.
Freidberg received her PhD in geography from the University of California, Berkeley. She has received research fellowships from the Rockefeller Foundation, a Fulbright, the Social Science Research Council, and the National Science Foundation Geography and Cultural Anthropology programs.
